Robert Mavounza is one of Martinique’s most respected cultural figures, a singer whose career spans more than four decades and whose voice is deeply woven into the island’s musical life. Born in 1964, he is best known as the founder and leader of Bakwa Nwel, a group closely associated with the tradition of chanté nwel, communal songs performed during the Christmas season. Instantly recognizable by his trademark Bakua hat, Mavounza is admired for both his commanding presence and his dedication to preserving Martinican heritage. While strongly linked to festive repertoires, his work also draws from older island styles such as biguine and mazurka, affirming his role as a cultural transmitter who balances celebration with continuity and respect for tradition.

“Fani Rozi Lili” is a tender Creole love song that favors warmth and sincerity over bravado, unfolding with a gentle, unhurried groove. Mavounza sings to the woman named in the title of the song, “You are the one who gives me love / Sweetness, my darling / I become as sweet as honey syrup / Fani Rozi Lili / You are the one who gives me love / No need to act macho.”
