Atabal

Atabal

Puerto Rico

Founded by Héctor Rodríguez in 1983, Atabal, which refers to a type of drum, is an Afro-Puerto Rican fusion band that emerged during a time when groups performing traditional bomba and plena music and dance were increasingly scarce on the island. Irvin García, Jorge Arce, and Ramón Pedraza joined forces with Héctor to establish the band, which went on to become one of the most important folk ensembles in Puerto Rico. Although Héctor passed away in 2020, his son, Caymmi Rodríguez, has taken the helm, bringing a lifetime of experience in bomba and plena and a modern attitude to his role as bandleader. Over the years, Atabal has expanded to include eleven musicians, evolving their sound to be more contemporary and urban while preserving the original devotion to their cultural roots.

Their infectious song "Me Dirás Que Si," is an upbeat and funky love song with deep African rhythms underpinning its catchy melody. "I dream that you can hear my song / To fall in love with every heartbeat / I have a heart / Just for you / When you want it / You will tell me yes."
