Formed in Antananarivo in 2023, Loko Gasy is a quartet of young Malagasy musicians dedicated to renewing and preserving their country’s musical heritage. Drawing on antsa rhythms from northern Madagascar and beko traditions from the South, they have developed a distinctive sound they call antsabeko, blending ancestral forms with contemporary jazz and fusion influences. At the center of the group is lead singer Saholiarisoa Safidinirina, whose expressive, grounded voice carries both strength and tenderness, anchoring the ensemble’s layered rhythms in lived experience. Through their music, Loko Gasy offers a vibrant portrait of modern Madagascar, rooted in tradition yet open to the world.

“Mampamangy” (To Visit and Offer Blessings) reflects on departure, longing, and the hope of reunion. Sung in Malagasy, the song moves between farewell and promise, its steady pulse echoing footsteps across distance. “I have gone far away / I traveled to distant lands / We said goodbye to one another / I left you, father,” the singer Saholiarisoa confides. “Even if I do not name the day / Even if it is not today it will not end / I will surely come back / Whether poor or suffering / Sprinkle water for me so I may find my way.”
