Israeli composer and multi-instrumentalist Eyal Luman has spent decades exploring the musical traditions of Central Asia, Turkey, Persia, and the Middle East. Born in 1972, he is a master of Middle Eastern percussion and the kanun, performing in styles ranging from ethnic and jazz to rock, flamenco, and folk. Luman has collaborated with renowned artists including Shlomo Bar, Ross Daly, Yair Dalal, and Eti Ankri, and toured internationally as part of the multicultural ensemble Diwan Saz. His Eyal Luman Ensemble blends ancient instruments with modern sensibilities, creating evocative arrangements that bridge East and West.
Featured Song:
“The Way Home,” a prayer for peace and safe reunions, features Luman on kanun, a Middle Eastern zither with a bright, harp-like tone, accompanied by Tuval Cohen on oud, the fretless lute central to Arabic, Turkish, and Persian music. Tiran Bublil’s duduk, an Armenian double-reed woodwind, adds a haunting, breathy timbre. Together with Rani Lorentz on bass, the ensemble weaves a meditative, cross-cultural tapestry. Flowing between delicate melodic exchanges and grounded rhythmic undercurrents, the piece conveys both yearning and hope, offering a musical vision of harmony across borders.
