Curly Strings is a four-piece string band from Estonia, formed in 2012 by folk music graduates who set out to make acoustic music with pop, bluegrass, and classical elements, all sung in Estonian. Their 2014 debut album Üle ilma won four Estonian Music Awards including Album of the Year, and in 2016 the band took the top prize at the European World of Bluegrass Awards. Over the years they have toured Europe, Japan, and Canada, and have performed with symphony orchestras in Estonia and Germany. The band has also collaborated with Estonian vocal ensemble Estonian Voices and rapper nublu, among others.

Their introspective song, “Miks Sa Murrad Mind” is featured on our Putumayo World Café album. Talsi sings from the point of view of a picked flower, a metaphor for a failed relationship. “Why do you break me / And carry me indoors / Where my blossoms shall begin to wilt / Why do you break me / Take me away from my roots.”
“Õnn” (Happiness) is built around mandolin, guitar, and double bass. Vocalist and co-writer Eeva Talsi has said the song grew out of a period of illness during which she came to feel that happiness lies in small gestures from the people closest to you. Lyricist Tõnis Parksepp helped shape that experience into words. “Happiness is not found in my achievements / Happiness is hidden in very little / Happiness is holding on to each other / Life is a beautiful privilege.”
