Updated: 1 day ago

Yeison Landero is a Colombian accordionist and bandleader born in San Jacinto, Bolívar, in the Montes de María region of Colombia’s Caribbean coast. He is the grandson of Andrés Landero, revered as “El Rey de la Cumbia” (The King of Cumbia), who began teaching him accordion at age seven. His first group, formed by his grandfather, performed under the name Los Nietos de Andrés Landero (Andrés Landero’s Grandchildren). Landero studied music at Bellas Artes and later completed a law degree at the University of Cartagena before committing fully to music. He has performed at venues including the Kennedy Center and the Lincoln Theatre, often alongside the legendary Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto, and received two Latin Grammy nominations in 2020.

“Noche de Cumbia” is an original composition from Landero Vive (2018), Yeison’s debut album and a tribute to his grandfather’s legacy. The song is a direct homage, naming Andrés Landero and San Jacinto explicitly within its lyrics. A lyric excerpt: “It was on a night of cumbia / Where I met you / There’s fire in your waist / When you dance for me.” As Landero has put it, his group’s mission is “strengthening that tree from the root” of cumbia’s tradition while carrying it to new audiences."
