“Dh’èirich Mi Moch Madainn Cheòthar” (I Arose Early on a Misty Morning) is a traditional Scottish Gaelic òran luaidh, or waulking song, here featuring guest vocalist Julie Fowlis. Originally from North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, Fowlis has released seven solo albums and contributed to numerous film soundtracks, including Disney/Pixar’s 2012 hit Brave. Waulking songs were sung by women pounding tweed to soften the cloth. The lyrics tell of a woman who married the wrong man: “My sweetheart came to meet me / We chattered about foolish things / He failed to come when he should have / A short time beforeI married / The son of the mournful old man / Who didn’t give me a belt, a head-dress or shoe.”
