Roy Tabwa is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose musical journey reflects a wide range of cultural influences. Born in Angola and raised in Portugal by Cabo Verdean parents, Roy was drawn early on to the traditional sounds of Cabo Verde, particularly the music of Fogo Island. After moving to the United States at age 16, he immersed himself in both global genres and formal musical training. Inspired by artists as diverse as Djavan, Lou Reed, and João Gilberto, he developed a distinctive style that weaves together Cabo Verdean traditions, Brazilian harmonies, and Western songwriting. His debut album The Tabwa People, released in 2020, was produced by renowned Cabo Verdean musician and engineer Kim Alves.

“Fidju Tabanka” (Child of Tabanka) is a celebration of gender expression, individuality, and spiritual worth. Set to the lively rhythm of tabanka, a Cabo Verdean musical style with Afro-Caribbean roots, the lyrics portray characters who defy traditional gender roles with confidence and grace: “There’s a girl who wears men’s pants / A little vest with a tie / A boy with a gentle flair.” The song’s refrain offers affirmation: “You are a child of the One / There’s a sea of people who love you.”
