Retimbrar is an eight-piece collective from Porto, Portugal, founded in 2008, whose music draws on national folklore, popular poetry, and oral tradition, creating a style they call Tugabeat, rooted in Portuguese musical heritage beyond fado. The group has collaborated over the years with artists including fado guitarist Marta Pereira da Costa and Galician singer Uxía, among others. Their album Levantar do Chão (2022) appeared on the Songlines magazine chart, the World Music Charts Europe, and the Transglobal World Music Chart.

“Maneio” (I Manage), a track from Levantar do Chão, tells the story of a woman navigating city life as friends and family are pushed out by rising costs, reflecting the gentrification reshaping Lisbon and Porto. The recording features a collaboration with Grupo Folclórico Tradições do Baixo Douro, a traditional folk ensemble from the Douro River region. “I am a city girl through and through / I have been in the game since I was young / I live at double the pace of half a life / With the hustle of my daily routine / How many leave the capital / Because their days are numbered.”
