Prophete (Haiti)

Daniel Prophete, who records as Prophete, was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and moved to the United States after the 2010 earthquake. After earning a degree in hospitality management, he left a job in the field in 2016 to pursue music full-time, studying music performance and business at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and music production at Berklee College of Music’s campus in Valencia, Spain. Now based in Austin, Texas he runs his own studio, Prokreate Studios, where he works as a producer and engineer. His songs draw on kompa, Afrobeat, reggae, R&B, and bossa nova, and move between Haitian Creole and English.

On “Konekte” (Connected), Prophete is joined by BélO, a singer from Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, who blends reggae and soul with traditional Haitian rhythms and has released seven albums since his debut, Lakou Tranquil (2005). The song reminds listeners that people who come from the same roots remain connected even when scattered, and no one has to carry their burdens alone. The chorus draws on rara, the Haitian street music of drums and bamboo trumpets: “We must beat the drum so we can hear its sound / Even if each person plays their own instrument / It’s when we play together that the music comes alive.”
