Omi Okun is a Rio de Janeiro–based band formed in 2018 that draws from the rhythms and chants of Afro-Brazilian religions Candomblé and Umbanda. The group fuses tradition with innovation, blending ijexá and other ancestral forms with modern arrangements. Its core members include Virgilio dos Santos (vocals, guitar), Bruno Rabello (drums), Dudu Bierrenbach (bass), André Aladê, Alexandre Munrah, and Luccas Xaxará (percussion). In addition to their original compositions, they perform reimaginings of spiritual songs heard in Afro-Brazilian terreiros (sacred spaces where rituals are performed). Their collaborations reflect a strong sense of community, including recent work with singer Fabíola Machado, and vocalists from the group Oriki-Yà. Omi Okun’s music seeks to honor cultural memory while creating space for contemporary spiritual and emotional expression.

“Maré Cheia” (High Tide) is a love song grounded in natural cycles and Afro-Brazilian spirituality. The lyrics evoke connection and protection: “Safe harbor between your heart and the sun / I want a hammock to rest beside you / With the blessings of Iemanjá.” The chorus invokes full moon rituals and movement: “Come dance at the time of high tide / In the sway of the ijexá.”
