Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh is a traditional singer and flute player from Dingle in West Kerry, where Irish is still widely spoken as a first language. A leading exponent of sean-nós, the ancient Irish tradition of ornamented, unaccompanied solo singing, she spent over thirteen years as lead singer with the Irish traditional group Danú before pursuing solo and collaborative work. The recipient of numerous awards and accolades for her musical talents, she is also a popular radio and television host. Her many collaborators include Julie Fowlis, the Irish Chamber Orchestra, the Philip Kutev Choir of Bulgaria, and she even experimented with electronic music as a member of the duo Aeons.
Featured Song:
“Cad É Sin Don Té Sin?” (What’s That to Anyone?) is a lively Irish-language song celebrating cheerful indifference to the opinions of others. The singer goes to the fair, courts a girl, drinks his shilling, and shrugs off anyone’s judgment: “Oh I’ll go to the fair and I’ll buy myself a cow / Oh I’ll go to the fair and I’ll buy two cows / I’d drink a shilling and I’d spend a crown / And what’s that to anyone? It’s no concern of theirs at all!”
