Magnifico is the stage name of Robert Pešut, a Slovenian musician whose sound blends schlager, disco, Balkan, Latin, and Alpine elements into something entirely his own. He first gained attention across the former Yugoslav region in the 1990s, and his 2004 Sony Music album Export/Import brought him international recognition, with the single “Hir aj kam, Hir aj go” reaching audiences in 64 countries. He also wrote Slovenia’s 2002 Eurovision entry, performed by drag trio Sestre, which sparked debate in the Slovenian Parliament. His song “Pukni zoro,” composed for a Serbian film, became so embedded in Serbian culture that many still don’t know it was written by a Slovenian.

“Ljubav prokleta” (Cursed Love) is a track recorded in Ljubljana in 2022, built around double bass, guitar, and accordion. Written for a Serbian production of the play Oedipus, the song follows a restless night of longing and parting, set against images of a yellow moon and encroaching darkness. “A silent night, no one is out there / Only me in your eyes / Now the darkness will swallow us up / And every trace will disappear after us / The cursed love is my sweetest one.”
