Louis Mhlanga is widely regarded as one of the greatest African guitarists of his generation. Born in South Africa and raised in Zimbabawe and shaped by an extraordinary musical journey spanning London, Nigeria, South Africa, and beyond, he developed a singular style that weaves together rock, jazz, blues, and the traditional rhythms of southern and West Africa, including the mbira patterns of the Shona people. Along the way he collaborated with luminaries including Oliver Mtukudzi, Thomas Mapfumo, Hugh Masekela, Fela Kuti, and King Sunny Ade, and has been a featured performer with the global Playing for Change project since 2007. His extensive discography includes the acclaimed albums Shamwari, World Traveller, and Living for the Living.

“Mdara Wangu,” which translates from Shona as “my elder” or “my father,” is a heartfelt dedication to the elders who shape and guide us. Produced by Mhlanga and recorded at Silver Grapes Studio in South Africa, the track features his longtime collaborators Jimi Indi on bass and Sam Mataure on drums, with percussionist Jesus Diaz adding rhythmic warmth. Mhlanga’s guitar work is characteristically fluid and expressive, weaving melodic lines that carry both the intimacy of a personal tribute and the communal spirit of a tradition honored across generations.
