“O Sol da Bahia” (The Sun of Bahia) is a celebration of Salvador and Bahian culture. The song traces a journey through the beaches of Pratigi and Itacaré before arriving in Salvador, where the narrator witnesses the Lavagem do Bonfim, the annual procession in which baianas, women rooted in Afro-Brazilian religious tradition, wash the steps of the Bonfim church with perfumed water. The ritual blends Catholic symbols and Afro-Brazilian Candomblé spirituality. “I am the heat that sets you on fire / From your feet up to your head / And makes you want to samba / The sun of Bahia feels different.”
