Dúo Karma (Cuba)

Dúo Karma is the partnership of singer Xóchitl Galán Molinet and guitarist Rodolfo “Fito” Hernández, both born in Havana and trained at the city’s music conservatories. Since 1999, they have been creating new songs for children and adults alike, mixing Caribbean rhythms with poetry, humor and body percussion. Their work has earned several Cubadisco awards, Cuba’s national music prize, including the Grand Prize in 2010. With songwriter Rita del Prado, they created La Guarandinga, a program of songs and games that takes children on a musical tour of Cuba’s regions and traditions. They have shared stages with Cuban children’s songwriter Teresita Fernández and opened for Silvio Rodríguez in Buenos Aires, Argentina where they have spent much of their time since 2012.

With lyrics by Xóchitl, “Danza” (Dance) begins with a simple idea: the movement of everyday objects can be seen as a dance. The verses turn into a game of observation, finding dance in a branch on a tree, light on water and a cornfield rustling in the wind. Joining Dúo Karma is Colombian singer-songwriter Marta Gómez, whose album Coloreando won the 2014 Latin Grammy for Best Latin Children’s Album. “Everything that moves with grace is dancing / Dance is beauty in motion / Poetry is words that dance / And now my thoughts spin, dancing.”
