Dunije is a Croatian trio composed of Dunja Knebl, Nina Romić, and Jelena Galić—three acclaimed singer-songwriters who have come together to revive and reinterpret traditional songs from Croatia’s diverse musical heritage. Their 2024 album Bilo je sada breathes new life into rarely recorded folk songs, most drawn from historical songbooks, and gives voice to the silenced experiences of women across generations. Each member brings a distinct artistic voice: Knebl is a pioneer in Croatian traditional music revival, Romić is a celebrated figure in contemporary folk, and Galić adds multi-instrumental and vocal depth. Together, they offer haunting, emotionally charged interpretations that are at once rooted in tradition and shaped by modern sensibilities.

Tuge moje tuge” (Sorrows, My Sorrows), sung in a regional Croatian dialect, expresses longing, distance and heartbreak, in which the singer’s beloved is “far beyond the crimson sea,” separated by forests, mountains and fate. “Sorrows, my sorrows, each day a different one / One does not pass before another comes / The shining moon says it will no longer light us.” With delicate harmony and sparse instrumentation, Dunije channels timeless nostalgia into a calming ballad.
