Djamel Laroussi is an Algerian singer, guitarist, composer, and arranger whose career bridges North African traditions with jazz, funk, and pop. Born in Algiers, he studied at the Conservatory of Cologne, becoming the first North African admitted to its jazz program. A left-handed guitarist known for his upside-down playing style, Laroussi has performed internationally and collaborated with many artists including Stevie Wonder. Appointed a UNESCO Artist for Peace, he promotes intercultural dialogue, often blending Berber, Arabic, French, and English lyrics. His recordings and performances highlight both Algerian roots and a global outlook, expressed through his distinctive voice and inventive guitar style.

“Kifach Hilti” (How Did You Do It) tells of a lost love. “Each time I think of her / The wound reopens and it hurts / Suddenly the sun goes dark / Without shelter everything feels fatal.” The refrain, “Wah ya djilali dawi hali,” meaning “Oh Djilali, heal my state,” is a plea for relief that also recalls Algeria’s Sufi heritage, invoking a spiritual guide as a source of healing. With its blend of lament and symbolism, the song conveys the enduring power of love and loss.
