“Codito’s Cumbia” is an instrumental homage to cumbia amazónica (Amazonian cumbia), a strand of the broader Peruvian chicha movement that emerged from jungle cities like Iquitos, Pucallpa, and Moyobamba in the 1960s and ‘70s. The pioneers of the sound, which has been hugely influential and has earned a following among fans of psychedelic and retro music, include bands such as Juaneco y Su Combo, Los Wembler’s de Iquitos, and Los Mirlos. These groups took the cumbia rhythms that made their way upriver from Colombia and leaned into jungle-rooted imagery and clean, guitar-driven melody lines that have spawned imitators from Bogotá to Brooklyn. Larsen wrote the track as a stylistic exercise after immersing himself in records by these iconic groups, then brought in guitarist Alan Ruiz and a group of Vancouver-based Latin session musicians, Yamil Chain-Haddad on bass and Chris Couto on percussion, to record it live, with Larsen himself on organ.
