Born in 1951 in St. Catherine Parish, Jamaica, Clinton Fearon is one of reggae’s great storytellers — a masterful and soulful singer and musician whose warmth and wisdom have inspired generations. In 1969, he joined the legendary Gladiators, founded the previous year by Albert Griffiths, serving as bassist, vocalist, and songwriter for nearly two decades. During that time, he helped craft some of roots reggae’s defining anthems before launching a celebrated solo career that has carried him across the world. Now based in Seattle, Fearon continues to share messages of hope, love, and self-reliance through his soulful, heartfelt sound.
Featured Songs:
“My Very Good Friend” is a heartfelt tribute to the power of music itself. Over a classic roots groove rich with Hammond organ and deep bass, Fearon sings with gratitude and joy: “Music is my very good friend / Music never let I down.” The song celebrates reggae’s enduring ability to heal and uplift — a faithful companion through hardship and happiness alike. “Music’s been there when I’m feeling low / I know because I’ve been there / Music’s been there when I’m feeling nice / And so I’m here to / Play us some music, sweet reggae music.”
“The Real Bush Doctor” is a gentle roots reggae meditation that honors the quiet labor of the natural world, using birds and insects as symbols of healing and balance. “The honeybee and the humming doctor bird / Always working, working hard / They are the real bush doctor / See them go from tree to tree, from flower to flower / Always busy working.”With its unhurried groove and repeated expressions of respect, the Caribbean Cruise song frames care, patience, and steady effort as forms of medicine drawn directly from nature.
