Ana Everling is a vocalist and storyteller from the Republic of Moldova, a small landlocked country in Eastern Europe with deep cultural and linguistic ties to neighboring Romania. She studied music in art schools in Moldova before busking on the streets of Chicago and eventually building an audience performing across the United States. A dedicated advocate for doina, a deeply expressive and increasingly rare Moldovan vocal form, Everling has been recognized for her work preserving and reimagining her country’s musical heritage with the title of Artist Emerit by the President of Moldova.

“Bătrâneasca” (Old Man’s Song) is a traditional dance song from the Bucovina region of Romania, performed here with folk instrumentation including the caval and fluier, two Romanian folk flutes, alongside banjo and violin. The lyrics follow a roving young man whose pursuit of women takes him across villages and ultimately to Heaven, where even the angels cannot grant him peace. “I flew to my lady on my horse / I passed over the hill slowly / To arrive in the village of Voitinel / From Remezău up the hill / I returned with longing in my heart / Because I hadn’t had enough of women.”
