The Sam Grisman Project is led by bassist and bandleader Sam Grisman, the son of mandolinist David Grisman, whose work helped revive acoustic string band traditions through collaborations with artists like Jerry Garcia. Building on that legacy, Sam Grisman brings together a rotating group of musicians to explore bluegrass, old-time, and folk repertoire with an emphasis on improvisation and ensemble interplay. His approach reflects both a respect for traditional forms and a contemporary sensibility shaped by years of performing within the acoustic music community

Featured Song:

“When First Unto This Country” is a traditional American ballad that traces its roots to older British folk songs, telling a story of love, regret, and imprisonment. The song has circulated widely in folk revival circles and was performed by artists including the Grateful Dead. This version features Tim O’Brien, a revered figure in bluegrass and folk music circles. The song follows the story of a newcomer who steals a horse to court a woman named Nancy, only to end up shaved, beaten, and subsisting on dry beans in the penitentiary. The song offers a wry, cautionary tale about the perils of chasing love through reckless means.
