Putumayo was founded in 1975 by Dan Storper after graduating college with a degree in Latin American studies and traveling extensively through South America. He opened 7 shops and wholesaled to more than 600 boutiques when he rediscovered his love of music and started a record label in 1993 focused initially on African, Latin and European music. Putumayo has released more than 20 Latin collections.
