Approximately 25 years ago, while visiting London, Putumayo Founder, Dan Storper, purchased a greeting card that was illustrated by a young British artist. Soon after, a Putumayo employee noticed it on his bulletin board and mentioned that Nicola was a friend and she would be visiting the US soon. Dan and Nicola met and he invited her to start illustrating Putumayo clothing and handicraft catalogs and first two CDs. More than 200 album cover illustrations later, the rest is Putumayo history. Now, with the launch of the company’s World Greeting Card collection featuring musical downloads, Putumayo and Nicola have come full circle.
Born in London, Nicola Heindl grew up outside of the city but returned to study illustration at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design. After graduating, she began to work as an illustrator of greeting cards and book jackets as well as magazines such as Vogue and Marie Claire. An avid traveler, she has been able to experience many of these cultures first-hand and frequently draws on her own experiences for inspiration. Her sketchbooks include drawings from India, Sri Lanka, Cameroon, Morocco, Tanzania, Panama, Spain and many other countries she’s visited over the years.
