Yvy Maraey (Germany / Brazil)
YVY MARAEY (who writes her name in capital letters) is an up-and-coming artist with roots in Berlin and Brazil. This track, recorded in Rio de Janeiro with New Zealand producers Simon Abela and Leo Mucuri, reflects her unique blend of European and Latin American elements. MARAEY has a reverence for the natural world and indigenous cultures with an effervescent youthfulness that infuses her original songs.
Yet she also reveres the classics as demonstrated by this striking rendition of the Beth Carvalho’s bittersweet classsic “Dança da Solidão” (Dance of Loneliness). “Loneliness is lava that covers everything,” she sings, “Bitterness, when in my mouth / Smiles with its teeth of lead.
